Dorn Research Institute, also known as DRI, is an independent non-profit corporation originally established in 1997 to support the research and educational activities at the William Jennings Bryan Dorn VA Medical Center in Columbia, SC.
The establishment of such corporations was allowed by Congress to provide a flexible funding mechanism for the receipt and administration of research and educational funds. The sole purpose of non-profit corporations housed in VA facilities is to advance the research mission of the Department of Veterans Affairs by supporting approved research and educational facilities.
DRI is a self-sustaining Internal Revenue Service designated non-profit 501(c) (3) corporation that derives its administrative and operational funding from fees, donations, and investment interest. Its research activities are conducted in accordance with VA regulations, as mandated by its Charter and Mission, and as recommended by its Board of Directors.
The purpose of DRI is to advance the research and education missions of the Department of Veterans Affairs, and specifically the Dorn VA Medical Center, Columbia, South Carolina through the support of research and education-related activities.
Dorn Research Institute’s vision is to be viewed as the regional leader in providing external funding and support for VA sited research.
