PREVENTABLE: One of the largest studies in older adults.

Are you or is someone you know 75 years or older and interested in helping other Veterans?Join the LARGEST dementia prevention study. The #PREVENTABLEtrial is recruiting older adults to study if taking a statin may prevent dementia.

Taking part in PREVENTABLE is easy. You can join the study in a clinic or from your home by phone anywhere in the United States. The study drug will be shipped to you and a study doctor will follow-up with you by phone through your medical records.

Why join PREVENTABLE?

By taking part in this study, you are playing an active  role in your own health care and helping to generate evidence on healthy aging that may help future generations.

You may also benefit from additional memory and physical function monitoring.

What should I expect if I decide to participate?

You will: 

  • have blood drawn (for an in-clinic visit only).

  • do a brief memory and physical test.

  • be randomized to take the study drug or a placebo, taking one pill a day.

  • have one approximately 30-minute follow-up phone call each year.

This study is expected to last five years and you will not be charged for the study drug or any study-related procedures.

How can I participate?

You may be a good fit for the study if you are a Veteran, 75 years or older, not taking a statin, and do not have: 

  • heart disease (heart attack or stroke)

  • dementia

  • a significant disability that limits your basic everyday activities

Only Veterans are eligible to participate.

Have a history of heart disease, heart attack or stroke?
Have any type of active liver disease?
Have dementia?
